Which Private Insurance Plans Cover Home Nursing in Ontario?
Who is this article for?
- A guide to private insurance coverage for home nursing in Ontario covering workplace extended health benefits, individual plans, group benefits, and what documentation insurers require for claims.
Types of private insurance that may cover home nursing
In Ontario, four categories of private insurance may provide home nursing coverage:
- Workplace group extended health benefits: Many employer group benefit plans include a home nursing or paramedical benefit. Coverage limits range from a few hundred dollars to unlimited depending on the plan design. Check your plan booklet under Nursing Care or Registered Nurse Home Visits.
- Individual health insurance plans: Policies purchased directly from insurers like Manulife, Sun Life, Canada Life, or Blue Cross may include home health care provisions.
- Long-term care insurance (LTCI): Specifically designed for extended care needs. See the separate LTCI guide for full details.
- Critical illness and disability insurance: Some CI or disability policies include home care benefit riders that activate following a qualifying health event.
What insurers typically require for home nursing claims
Documentation requirements vary by insurer but typically include:
- A completed claim form (provided by the insurer)
- The WOXY itemised receipt showing service type, date, provider credentials, and cost breakdown
- A copy of the service description or care plan (available from your WOXY account)
- For some plans: a physician referral or letter of medical necessity
WOXY can provide a detailed service letter on request at support@woxy.ca.
How to check if your plan covers home nursing
Contact your HR department or benefits administrator and ask specifically whether registered nurse home visits, private duty nursing, or home health care services are covered. Many people discover coverage they did not know they had. Ask for the annual maximum, whether pre-authorization is required, and whether direct billing is available.
What WOXY receipts include for insurance claims
Every WOXY service receipt includes the service type and clinical description, date of service, provider name and CNO registration number (for nursing visits), the care address, Ontario HST breakdown, and the total amount charged. This level of detail satisfies the documentation requirements of most major Canadian group insurers. For PSW visits, the receipt includes the PSW certification information.
Direct billing and reimbursement
WOXY does not currently offer direct billing to insurance companies. Payment is collected at or before the time of service, and you submit the WOXY receipt to your insurer for reimbursement. Reimbursement timelines vary by insurer. Keep your WOXY receipts as soon as your appointment is complete — they are stored in your account and can be re-downloaded at any time from the billing section of your dashboard.
