WHAT WE MEASURE

Three months of blood sugar history. Captured in a single number.

Average Blood Glucose

Average Blood Glucose

HbA1c measures the percentage of haemoglobin carrying glucose in your blood, reflecting your average blood sugar across the past two to three months. It is a far more complete picture of glucose control than any single fasting test.

WHY IT MATTERS

Blood sugar problems often develop silently. Early testing is your most effective prevention tool.

Early Detection of Prediabetes

Prediabetes affects millions of people who are unaware of their condition. HbA1c testing identifies elevated glucose before it progresses to type 2 diabetes, giving you time to act.

WHO IS THIS FOR

Most prediabetes cases go undetected for years.

HbA1c testing is clinically relevant well beyond those already diagnosed with diabetes. If any of the following applies to you, a single test provides immediate clinical clarity.

Adults with Prediabetes or Borderline Blood Sugar

An HbA1c between 5.7% and 6.4% is the most actionable window in metabolic health. Early identification allows lifestyle intervention before type 2 diabetes develops.

Individuals Already Managing Type 2 Diabetes

Regular HbA1c testing is the gold standard for assessing how well diabetes is controlled and whether current medications or lifestyle adjustments are achieving their intended effect.

Adults with Obesity or Excess Body Fat

Excess body fat, particularly visceral fat, is strongly associated with insulin resistance and elevated blood glucose. Testing provides an objective metabolic risk assessment beyond weight or BMI.

Those with Family History of Diabetes

Genetic predisposition significantly elevates the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Proactive screening identifies elevated glucose before clinical onset.

Adults with Metabolic Risk Factors

Hypertension, PCOS, and metabolic syndrome are closely associated with impaired glucose regulation. HbA1c testing provides a direct measure of metabolic health alongside these conditions.

Anyone Who Has Never Been Tested

Most prediabetes cases are undiagnosed. There are no symptoms. A single HbA1c test is the only reliable way to know whether your blood sugar is within a healthy range.

FAQ

Common Questions

HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) reflects your average blood sugar levels over the past 2–3 months. Unlike a fasting glucose test, it captures long-term glucose patterns and is the gold standard for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes and prediabetes.

A small blood sample is taken via a simple finger-prick or venous draw. The sample is analysed to measure the percentage of haemoglobin that has glucose attached to it. Results are typically available within minutes at WOXY.

No fasting is required for an HbA1c test. Because it measures your average blood sugar over 2–3 months, what you eat on the day of the test does not affect the result. You can eat and drink normally beforehand.

Results below 5.7% are considered normal. Between 5.7% and 6.4% indicates prediabetes — a critical window for lifestyle intervention. 6.5% or above on two separate tests is diagnostic of diabetes. Your WOXY registered nurse will explain your results in full context.

For individuals with normal results and no risk factors, annual testing is generally sufficient. Those with prediabetes or diabetes, or with risk factors such as obesity, family history, or hypertension, may benefit from testing every 3–6 months.

Yes. Certain conditions such as anaemia, haemoglobin variants, kidney disease, or recent blood transfusions can affect HbA1c accuracy. Our registered nurses will review your health history and flag any factors that may influence interpretation.
